orchard apple tree hasmade no bonesabout where it stand in the effectual face - off with the FBI over concealment and encryption . And most of Silicon Valley has been in arrangement : Dropbox , Facebook , Google , Microsoft , Snapchat , LinkedIn , and Yahoo are among the40 company gestate to file court briefsbacking Apple . Even Amazon isexpected to file a court briefbacking Apple — which is odd because the company just softly removed encoding from Fire OS 5 in an update that rolled out to all major Fire tablets .

David Scovetta , a member of the Electronic Freedom Foundation , tweet the above image when he noticed that his Fire Tablet would no longer support encryption . We reached out to Amazon to reassert — and , indeed , local gadget storage is no longer encrypted for Fire tablets running O 5 . But , the company argues that communicating between those tablets and the swarm are cypher . Here ’s exactly what Amazon say in an electronic mail sent to Gizmodo :
In the fall when we released Fire OS 5 , we murder some initiative feature article that we found customers were n’t using . All Fire tablets ’ communication with Amazon ’s swarm see our high standards for privacy and security including appropriate use of encryption .

It ’s an interesting move , considering how much encryption and equipment privacy is in the news show right now : Apple latterly enounce it ’s not fail to give the FBI a skeleton keyto unlock one iPhone a terrorist used , because it could open a Pandora ’s box that impact other exploiter , too .
Given that context , Amazon ’s move seems middling backwards , especially considering your previously protect Fire Tablet is no longer encrypted once it ’s updated . We ’ll see how this pan off out for Fire owner down the road .
