Astronomer Marc Buie has been describe the shadower of a swarm of rocky body as they pass in front of stars , leaving behind a distinct impression of their shape . These space rock music are known as the Trojan asteroid , two groups of asteroid that lead and conform to Jupiter as they orbit the Sun .
NASA’sLucy spacecraftis on its way to Jupiter ’s Trojan asteroids for a fortune to get a unaired feeling at the primaeval rocks . But before its scheduled arrival at the Trojans in 2027 , Buie and his team have been providing the mission scientist with strange and exciting details about the elusive quad rock’n’roll . The astronomer has been traveling the world , leading a squad of over 500 professional and amateurish astronomer observing the Trojans . The team member are gearing up for an chance to gather even more detail about the asteroid later this month , for which they will journey across Europe to tag the Trojans across the sky .
Buie has been observing the Trojan asteroid since 2018 as part of the occultation campaign for the Lucy foreign mission . eclipse , or eclipses , go on when an object hap in front of a headliner and temporarily blocks its light , allowing the observer to follow out feature article like its embodiment and size of it . “ We ’re basically look at this star with a scope , and then at the appoint time , the star disappears . So far , Buie has visualise 21 eclipse of the Trojans from dissimilar parts of Europe , Australia , Senegal , and the United States , but he ’s not done yet . As the Lucy eclipse science lead at the Southwest Research Institute , Buie has assembled an international team of astronomers to pitch up for a big notice event come up on October 23 .

“ I ’m a small nervous , I like to be there . But I got ta learn how to organize them from afar , ” Buie concede . The stargazer has been chasing the asteroids all over the world , and this year has been particularly tiring . normally , Buie will have one eclipse every year or two that ’s worth observing , “ but the pace has picked up with Lucy , ” he said . In the retiring 12 month , Buie and his squad have monitor 13 occultations , with all but one being outside the U.S.
That ’s due to the Milky Way , where most of the stars are concentrated in the astronomic plane . The Trojan asteroid are currently egest across the equator of the wandflower , where the prospect of them hitting stars are much in high spirits than if they were passing the galactic pole . By next class , the routine of occultation of the Trojan asteroids will start to drop as they shift their place . “ I ’ve instruct over the years that you never say no to a near occultation chance , ” Buie said . “ You do n’t get to say , “ I ’m too busy , I ’ll do it next year . ”
The acquired occultations data will directly impart to the Lucy mission ; the space vehicle will seek to corroborate these findings while research the Trojans from up close . Each dataset , whether from the occultations or the spacecraft , will compliment the other to make a fuller picture of the supernal object being observed .
The data coming out of the occultations so far has been well worth it . During one of the eclipse in March , the team discovered a moonlet around asteroid Polymele , the smallest of the Trojan mark . The moonlet is around 3 international nautical mile broad ( 5 km ) , orbit Polymele , which is itself around 17 miles wide of the mark ( 27 km ) , at a space of 125 miles ( 200 km),according to NASA . Although it is yet to be named , the tiny asteroid was added to the listing of Lucy ’s butt , along with another small satellite around Eurybates that was let out in January 2021 by the Hubble Space Telescope .
The Trojan occultations have also revealed the shapes of these objects to a level never seen before . The occultations team has noted material topography on the asteroids , where there could be impact craters or large canyons . “ That ’s surprising , ” Buie said . “ Personally , I thought the bigger ace were going to just be like billiard balls — very smooth , and featureless , or nearly featureless , domain . ”
The Trojan asteroids merit their own commission since they may contain clue to how the solar system formed . These space stone are held in a gravitational reconciliation turn between Jupiter and the Sun and are believe to be the remnants of the primal material that formed the outer planets . The Trojans have in all likelihood existed for the retiring four billion years , but scientist have yet to get a close feel at this gang of asteroid .
Enter Lucy . The spacecraftlaunchedin October 2021 on an unprecedented mission toexplore the Trojan asteroids . The $ 981 million ballistic capsule is slate to visit one asteroid in the Main Belt between Jupiter and Mars and eight Trojan asteroid . Lucy was originally meant to visit seven asteroids , but now its target count is up to nine . “ Lucy ’s tagline started out : 12 age , seven asteroid , one spacecraft , ” Lucy ’s program scientist Tom Statler said in astatementfrom August . “ We keep get to change the tagline for this mission , but that ’s a good problem to have . ”

Once Lucy reach the asteroids , the occultation squad will get a flake of a snorkel . “ You ca n’t do this for free , it accept money to support the people renting car , plane flights , hotel rooms , ” Buie said . “ So when the mission was proposed , I catch a budget to do these military campaign . But as soon as I ’m eat up doing all this occultation work for Lucy , and the money is gone from Lucy , then it ’s going to go back to being quiet . ”
