Researchers from Germany say that carmine Grant Wood ants exchange their behavior markedly just before an earthquake hits — a possible meter reading they can feel it coming .
This is not the first meter the prognosticative powers of pismire have been observed . Prior to rainstorms , they ’ve been see to draw out the peak of their mounds , or evensprout wing and fly by . The newest evidence , about ants predicting temblor , was presented by Gabriele Berberich at theEuropean Geosciences Union ’s yearly meeting in Vienna .
Berberich , who form at the University Duisburg - Essen , canvass the behavior of over 15,000 individual scarlet woodwind ants living alongside a German fault pipeline . Over the grade of three years , her team meticulously catalogued their behavior using video cameras and special software .

It was over the trend of this clip that 10 seism hit the region , range in order of magnitude from 2.0 to 3.2 , including many small tremors . The ants brush aside anything below a 2.0 temblor , which is also the smallest quake that human race can finger .
Normally , ants are diurnal like humans ; they ’re up and active during the day , and they lie inside the hillock at night .
But before an quake hits , the ants get unsatisfied and they give the hill — even at nighttime . It ’s risky behaviour because they ’re highly vulnerable to night predators . The research worker also notice that normal ant deportment did n’t come back until at least a day after the temblor .

Berberich theorizes that the ants are pluck up on changing flatulence emissions or local shifts in the Earth ’s magnetic fields . She says they have chemoreceptor for carbon dioxide slope and magnetoreceptors for electromagnetic fields that enable them do this .
