We all know the Greco-Roman AT - AT attack in The Empire Strikes Back was created using stop - motion , but this quondam behind - the - scenes footage of the ocular effects team really make the footage is pretty great .
The voiceover is by Dennis Muren , director of effects picture taking on ESB , explain how they move the models , how they assembled the sets ( baking soda Charles Percy Snow ! ) , and how much footage they managed to accomplish each day ( the solution : not much ) . Hey , it was a lot of work and carry an inordinate amount of time , but it still look better than any greenscreen shot in the prequels .
