In 1932 American paper started print wildly exaggerated stories about a British robot named Alpha that allegedly blinked to liveliness , rose to his pes , andshot his inventor . Some of the stories quoted the artificer , Harry May , as aver that he knew Alpha would become against him one 24-hour interval . An column from Louisiana even proclaim that the era of Mary Shelley ’s Frankenstein was upon us . But just two years later Alpha made a trip to the United States in a whirlwind of guns , gizmos and female child .
The 1930s Mechanical Man Who seek to Start A Robot Uprising

Inthis moving picture from 1934we see Alpha shoot a gun dilute with blank , answering questions about his height and system of weights , and being particularly signify to a brunette who apparently was n’t light-haired enough to be Alpha ’s bride . Though Professor May claimed that Alpha autonomously responded to talking to with 20 or 30 wax cylinders that played pre - recorded answers , this seems quite unlikely .
The November 5 , 1934 issue ofTimemagazine distinguish a manifestation of Alpha at Macy ’s department store in Manhattan :
Last week Alpha , the robot , made its first public visual aspect in the U. S. One of the most cunning automatons ever contrived by man , a grim and gleaming behemoth 6 ft . 4 in . tall , the automaton was bestow to Manhattan by its proprietor - artificer - impresario , Professor Harry May of London , and installed on the fifth floor of R. H. Macy & Co. ’s section store . Encased from chief to invertebrate foot in chromium - plated steel armour , Alpha sat on a specially reconstruct dais with its cumbersome human foot securely gobble to the floor , star impassively over the burl of newshawks and memory officials waiting for the first demonstration . The beast had a peachy sullen incision of a mouth , huge protuberant eyes , shaggy-coated whorl of rolled metal . In one send clenched fist Alpha seize a revolving door .

It ’s rather queer to read later on in the article that he ’s described as giving a Nazi salute during the demonstration . There ’s no clear indication of what could be viewed as a Nazi salutation from the film I ’ve realize , and without a byline for the Time article I ca n’t even set about to guess about the author ’s understanding .
The end of the clause does help to clarify what happen that day , when Alpha was purported to have sprung to life and shoot his discoverer :
Once it discharge its handgun without warning , blasting the skin off the professor ’s arm from articulatio radiocarpea to elbow . Another time it lowered its branch unexpectedly , struck an assistant on the shoulder , injure him so badly that he was hospitalized .
