Timothy Kildee, the brother of Michigan Rep.Dan Kildee, was fatally shot on Tuesday morning in Genesee County, Mich., the Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said in apress conference.

He could be charged with “a count of open murder, a count of carjacking, a charge of armed robbery, a charge of using a firearm during the commission of a felony, a charge of carrying a concealed weapon and likely a motor vehicle infraction for the crash,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said in the press conference.

“Our family is grieving and heartbroken. There are no words to describe the loss of a beloved brother and family member, especially in such a terrible tragedy. I thank the community for honoring my family’s privacy during this very difficult time,” the Democratic representative wrote in a post onX (formerly known as Twitter).

The police were first called regarding a domestic dispute in Burton, Mich., around 2:50 a.m. on the 3500 block of Columbine Street. Swanson said that there was “a gun presented” during the verbal confrontation.

After the confrontation, Timothy’s son left the house “on foot” and contacted his mother (who is Timothy’s ex-wife). “Sometime between that and shortly after five o’clock in the morning today. That mother picked him up and was taking him back to his dad’s place,” said Swanson.

As they headed towards Timothy’s home in Vienna Township, the 27-year-old “jumped out of the moving vehicle.” The parents then went to search for their son.

The other son then told authorities he heard a gunshot, which Swanson said is believed to be the shot that killed the victim.

The 27-year-old suspect allegedly then took the victim’s car and fled the scene at high speed. Eight minutes after the shooting, the suspect crashed into another car.

The suspect suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital — and remains on police watch at the hospital. The two other people in the other vehicle are “doing well” and suffered “minor injuries.”

“The behavior of the suspect lends anyone to believe that there was some type of breakdown and or other entanglements that caused him to be so violent,” said Swanson.
