New archeologists have found two artificial big toes in Egyptian tombs : the linen and plaster “ Greville Chester toe , ” which dates back past 600 BC ( below ) ; and the wood and leather “ Cairo toe , ” which was built between 950 - 710 BC and was unearthed affixed to a female mummy . investigator were diffident if these equipment were operational or merely esthetic , but after some sure - hoof it examination , they appear to be the early prosthetics discover yet .
To examine whether these tomb toes were used as prostheses , investigator at the University of Manchester ramp up facsimiles and asked volunteers ( who were missing their correct big toe ) to give the recreations a test run . Sure enough , the false toes offer great mobility and ease . Said Manchester study leader Dr. Jacky Finch in a late article inThe Lancet :
To be sort out as unfeigned prosthetic twist any replacement must satisfy several criteria . The textile must resist bodily forces so that it does not flick or crack with use . Proportion is important and the appearance must be sufficiently graphic as to be satisfactory to both the wearer and those around them . The ambo must also be keep clean , so it must be well-off to take on and off . But most significantly , it must assist walk . The bountiful toe is retrieve to carry some 40 % of the bodyweight and is responsible for forward actuation although those without it can conform well [ … ]

My own enquiry used two Volunteer with similar amputation sites and suggested that replication of both ancient Egyptian false toe performed super well . Neither design should be expected to be completely efficient in emulate the flexion of the normal left big toe when pushing off . However , high efficiency was recorded by one volunteer when wearing the replica cartonnage prothesis and also when wear the wooden one ( both worn with replica Egyptian sandals ) . More significantly , no significant meridian in pressure under the sole was recorded although both volunteers found the articulated wooden conception to be specially well-to-do
