Last nighttime ’s Eureka saw the debut of Felicia Day as overactive astrophysicist Dr. Holly Marten , and , in genuine Eureka way , she almost accidentally destroyed the town on her very first daylight . Yep … she’ll fit in quite nicely .

“ Reprise ” is a reasonably typical Eureka instalment , excepting of form the introduction of nerd pet Felicia Day . After last week ’s mishap with the faster - than - light movement , the government has sent Dr. Marten to evaluate the future of Eureka , which Fargo lead as a trusted foretoken he ’s about to be fired . He deals with this little problem by atomize Holly with the FTL driveway , which he ’s pretty sure will kill her . gratefully , it does n’t , but that ’s just the offset of some deeply unearthly behavior .

When Zane fail in his attempt to find out from Jo the truth about the original timeline , he goes and burns down her house with a flamethrower . ( How many times now has Jo ’s sign been demolish ? Without wait it up , I ’m plump to say … three prison term . ) Jack , who is supposed to be taking the day off to depend after Allison ’s kids , agnise that people are being hypnotize by the music they ’re mind to , even if it means killing multitude , pursue in wanton property destruction … or make an ever - growing bubble that will suspend Eureka in time forever .

I make out Eureka is supposed to be a light , flossy show , but it kind of amazes me how much you have to recall through some of these plots for them to make any sense . “ Reprise ” is peculiarly guilty of that – the metre house of cards threat and the music hypnosis threat sync up , but only scarcely , and the actual logic of where the time bubble is at any give point can be a bit hard to cypher out .

aboveboard , the stasis field was probably just a contrivance too far , and it might have been a effective call for the episode just to bond to citizenry take their preferred songs far too literally , and how that unavoidably make everyone to rive each other asunder . Also , it would have been overnice to know whether Kevin himself was pretend by a song and that ’s why he was act so uncontrollably , or if that ’s just who he is unremarkably . I guess the fact that he never observe having listened to a call points to the latter , but still … it ’s such an obvious alternative interpretation that it would have been in force for him to affirm one elbow room or the other if he had listened to a call . Or perhaps Eureka is trying out some unpretentious ambiguity in its old age ? [ redact : As many of you have point out , Kevin was listen to cop - touch songs , which explicate at least part of his demeanor . apology for the oversight on my part . ]

As for Felicia Day as Dr. Holly Marten … well , frenzied does n’t really begin to describe it . This is one of those characters that ’s on a constant razor ’s edge between being an actual person and just a big purse of quirks . To be sure , Day is a fun to watch , and she gets the most out of the lineament as write , but yeah … if everyone involved does n’t know exactly what they ’re doing with Holly , she ’s going to get very chafe very tight . But hey – at least it ’s a gracious change from the time of year - prospicient guest star being a sharply - tongue , mistily mystifying tug with maybe sinister motives , as has been the slip for the retiring couple of iterations of the show .

The one matter I will say for “ Reprise ” is that it probably works a second better when watched again , if only because some of the stuff in it wo n’t seem as wasted anymore . The show does n’t generally use a net ton of pop music , so in the early going I aboveboard compute they were just trying to squander through their music licence budget as promptly and as intrusively as potential . ( in person , I do n’t like a ton of well - known pop music blasted in a TV show or picture show – that ’s a big problem I have with Forrest Gump , for example . ) At least all that medicine does n’t seem quite so crowbarred in when see in retrospect .

And then there ’s the Allison subplot , which seemed like the most superfluous thing the show had ever done . ( I figured it might just be an self-justification to get Salli Richardson - Whitfield out of the means so that she could target the episode , but this is n’t the installment she ’s directing . ) I kept wait for the other shoe to drop and for something interesting to happen , and sure enough , just as I had given up all hope , I get pip with a Brobdingnagian secret plan tress at the conclusion of the installment .

I ’m afraid the bad reveal does n’t wholly loosen how verbose the subplot was , but at least it served some purpose I judge . Even if that intention was wreak back Beverly Barlowe , the show ’s would - be villainness if her motivations were n’t so incoherent . candidly , she ’s really a holdover from the original construct of the show , which was way too mired in convoluted mythology ( seriously people , that freaking artifact ) , and her yield during the James Callis game last year did n’t do much for me . And I say that as someone who really wants to like the character – or at least I like Debrah Farentino in the use .

I guess that ’s my grown takeaway from “ Reprise ” – it teases a lot of stuff that could be really groovy , or they could stop the show idle in its tracks . If I had to guess , Dr. Holly Marten is plausibly more of the former , and the reappearance of Beverly Barlowe is the latter . Of course , I ’d be more than felicitous to be show only 50 % right about that … as long as it ’s the right 50 % , that is .
