Luke ’s dismay at not being able to maintain the balance his bloodline was meant to bring in while training Ben Solo ; the fact that the supposedsacred Jeditexts were not all they were mean to be ; that even figure like Yoda tell our heroes that new generations ask to find their own path , beyond the rule and tenets establish by the past times — all these little thing combine in the Last Jedi as a refutation of the prophecies and mythos that define the grander story of Star Wars ’ past . While we do n’t know how it ’ll play out just yet , the flick leaves a route open for its raw heroes and scoundrel , like Rey and Kylo Ren ( and a coevals of Force exploiter beyond them ) , to forge their own portion within the Force , rather than being subservient to the dichotomy that drive Luke , Yoda , Obi - Wan , and the Force wielders before them .
