Britney Spearsis finding joy in life’s simple things.
Ahead of the release of her long-awaited memoirThe Woman in Me, the music icon, 41, is opening up to PEOPLE about her life today, and the things that keep her engaged during downtime nearly two years after herconservatorship was terminatedin November 2021.
“I am a simple girl,” Spearstells PEOPLE exclusively in a new interview done via email. “I really love people. I love God, I still love my family and close friends, I love tea parties and dinner parties. My friend Cade [Hudson] has me to dinner where I meet the most creative people I admire who make me belly laugh.”

But she finds joy in everyday moments, whether “playing with my dogs [or] watching episodes ofFriendsand belly laughing,” she says. “I love, love to travel and explore. When I was touring, I would be in a city for one day then on to the next. Experiencing cultures in the cities I visit.”
Spears is still learning to navigate life following her nearly 14-year conservatorship. And along the way, she’s expressed gratitude for her “amazing friends.”

In September, the “Toxic” singergave fans some insighton Instagram about her love for those in her inner circle, and the added importance of “self-love.”
“l’m so lucky to have amazing friends,” Spears wrote alongside images of her and a male pal. “Positive affirmations are important to me at the moment !!! I say this because I’m going through a divorce and having to reflect my past in a book was … let’s just say not easy !!! I’m just saying !!!”

Nowadays, as Spears acknowledged, she takes things “one day at a time” and is “learning to breathe,” with self-love being “so unbelievably important” to her.
“I woke up and just cried because I felt grateful to be in such a beautiful place,” she added in a recent post. “Then I thought about my relationship to Instagram at the moment … it’s addicting!!! But when others’ opinions affect you, that’s when people quit it.”

As for Spears’ friends, her admiration for her pals alsoextends to some famous ones. Earlier this month, the superstar posed for a photo with Colombian musiciansJ Balvin,Maluma, and the post gave a glimpse of the fun moment.
“Who is like me in love?” Maluma, 29, captionedthe Instagram, which featured Balvin and Spears embracing each other at a table as Maluma sat with his arms crossed and a straight face.
Balvin, 38, commented underneath the image, “Oh God hahahahahahahaha I can’t get over it.”
Spears latershared her own photos, writing, “HOLY S— it just hit me … I can’t believe I met these 2 !!! Holy smokes🔥”
