Stanley Kubrick’s2001 : A Space Odysseyis rightfully herald as a milestone in science fable filmmaking , but even its most ardent fan would have a tough meter explaining the final scenes of the movie .

From the dizzyingly psychedelic “ stargate chronological succession ” to the foreign hotel elbow room and the appearance of the nebulous Star Baby,2001signs off with far more interrogative sentence than answers — motion that have been discussed and dissected for 50 years . But now we might have a concrete explanation of just what was travel on from Kubrick himself .

In a video brand to theEyes On CinemaYouTube page , as discoveredby io9 , we see footage of movie maker Jun’ichi Yaoi on the phone in 1980 , with someone who is purported to be Kubrick . This was all during Yaoi ’s documentary on the paranormal , so a natural interview study would have been Kubrick , who was makingThe Shiningat the time . During the interview , though , Yaoi enquire the director what precisely pass at the end of2001 , to which Kubrick pay a full account , as transcribed by io9 :

Obviously , that ’s a good deal to take in , but it jibes with what Arthur C. Clarke wrote in the2001book , both of which were developed at the same time . In the book ’s ending , cosmonaut Dave Bowman is very obviously on display in an artificial environs , which resemble a swank hotel room . Only this elbow room is furnished with dummy drawers that ca n’t open , cosmetic rule book that are only attached to shelves , and empty televisions , much like an IKEA saleroom ; the menagerie connection is much clearer as a result as Clarke walks referee through this unknown , faux - human habitat .

As io9 points out , this Kubrick video may be a small “ too good to be true , ” especially since there ’s no unequivocal optic evidence that he ’s in reality mouth . Still , the explanation does have system of weights when taken with Clarke ’s authorship , but after 50 years and countless essays and theories on the guinea pig , it ’s dubious that this will put an last to the treatment on one of the most complex end in all of film .
